With a twinkle in her eye she has presided silently over countless drinkers & diners at Firefly. She has witnessed blind dates, breakups, makeups, & proposals- both marital and indecent. She graces us with her presence every time a toast is raised, yet few people know her story.
Lucetta Sernia was somewhat of a wild child. Born in 1884 in San Severo di Foggia, Italy, she was the youngest of thirteen artistic siblings. She was ever the attention seeker and was a natural performer as soon as she could walk and talk.
Lucetta dropped out of school at an early age to join a travelling cabaret. She spent most of her teen years touring Europe as a line dancer and a sideshow performer. One of the only remaining images we have of her taken in 1904 depicts her on pointe – on a champagne bottle no less, with a sword in hand!
After years of travelling & saving she hung up her flats, returned home & set up a modest ‘Enoteca’. Her small bar offered local wine, simple rustic bites & warm conversation. It fast became the beating heart of San Severo. An institution.
To avoid paying licensing fees Lucetta still the rebel didn’t name her venue so the local bureaucracy couldn’t address an invoice. Over time it simply became known to patrons as ‘La Lucetta/La Lucciola, literally translating to Little Light/The Firefly.
A century later we continue an old tradition at our modern day Firefly. We welcome you to come and share the legacy of good wine, honest sharing food & warm service that shines like its’ namesake.
